The Applied Materials Solar Technology Center (STC) in Xi’an, China is one of the world’s largest individual company funded solar R&D centers and a first of its kind. Spread over an area of 40,000 sq. meters the facility is fully equipped with the latest in solar PV production and test equipment for wafering, cell manufacturing, advanced module assembly and module reliability testing.
Established in 2008 with an objective to expand advanced R&D in the area of solar PV, the Xi’an STC has rapidly grown and has consistently proven itself by successfully developing and demonstrating several technological innovations including advanced roadmap applications like double printing, selective emitter, metal wrap through and emitter wrap through. The center serves as an important hub for customer collaboration; new applications and product development; equipment and process support; product training; process validation and demos.
The key strength of the STC, in addition to truly world class infrastructure, is of course the people. Staffed with the industry’s best minds, the center continues to attract top talent from across China and the rest of the world. The center is also well integrated with Applied Materials’ global network of solar R&D labs that include facilities in Santa Clara, (CA, United States, Passivation Product), Treviso (Italy, Baccini Printing Systems), Cheseaux (Switzerland, HCT Wafering Systems), and Gloucester (MA, United States, Varian Implant Systems); enabling access to a wider resource bases.
The Applied Materials STC continues to play an important role as China works to build its renewable power infrastructure, by helping accelerate the industrialization of clean energy technology in order to decrease the cost of solar. This is a powerful benefit Applied Materials is bringing to its customers and to China.
