Position Summary

The Vice President/Business Unit Manager is responsible for directing all activities relating to Veeco MBE (Molecular Beam Epitaxy) products, including the following:

·         Product marketing

·         Product development

·         Technical and after-sales support

·         Engineering, including development, design, and systems engineering

·         New business development

·         In addition, the VP/Business Unit Manager will have responsibility for Operations to ensure the effective delivery of products to customers, management of inventory, and cost reduction initiatives. 

 

This position will report to the Senior Vice President of Solar. Direct reports will include:

·         Marketing

·         Technical Support

·         Development Engineering

·         Systems Engineering

·         Dotted line reports include Operations, Finance, Sales and Human Resources

Duties and Responsibilities

·         Acts as the senior Veeco leader and role model for the St Paul facility and on-site point of contact for employee or facility-related issues.

·         The VP/Business Unit Manager is responsible for developing and managing a business plan with the goals to increase bookings, market share, and year-over-year growth. Success is measured at both the top line (in bookings, revenue and gross margin) and bottom line (EBITA).

·         Develop and direct product strategy in the MBE market, and adjacent markets, such as Organic LED and Concentrator Solar Cells. 

·         Identify business development opportunities for the business unit and Veeco.

·         Work in partnership with Veeco’s sales leadership to achieve and exceed business plans for bookings, revenue and profit.

 
Position Requirements

The ideal candidate will be an experienced, self-motivated executive with demonstrated success in management of a comparable business. Specific required skills include:

·         Demonstrated business unit management skill set/background coupled with experience in a capital equipment functional discipline, such as marketing, engineering or product management. .

·         Strong analytical skills and solid understanding of business concepts that drive the purchasing decisions in universities, government labs, and commercial companies. Must understand economics of capital equipment supply chain and be experienced in negotiating contracts on favorable economic terms.

·         Demonstrated financial acumen applicable to business development, product marketing and development and operational excellence.

·         Strong leadership, management and organizational skills; Great communication (speaking and listening), presentation and influencing skills; Effective at creating cultural alignment across functions and a sense of urgency.

·         Demonstrated successful development and implementation of strategy for the launch of complex, new product releases of technology-rich products resulting in accelerated revenue from new products and driving into emerging technology growth markets.

·         Partner effectively with Worldwide Sales organization that serves as the distribution channel for sales and field service.

·         International business experience and a track record of global success. Strategic mindset and creative business development skills. Excellent decision-making ability. Takes initiative in any area where required.

·         Business development experience to identify new markets, partnerships, and alliances, resulting in revenue and profitability gains.

·         30% travel, including between operating sites, customer visits, and conference attendance. Travel is both domestic and international.

 
Qualifications

·         To perform this job successfully, an individual must have at least 10 – 15 years of related management and business leadership experience in a high-technology company, preferably in a capital equipment market.

·         Experience managing both marketing and product development technical staff is essential.  

·         Knowledge and proven track record of success working with large capital equipment. 

·         Ability to manage complex projects.  

·         Excellent oral and written communication skill and decision making ability. 

·         Ability to work under pressure and time constraints. 

·         Strong negotiation skills.

·         BS/MS in a technical discipline is required with MBA strongly preferred.
