Description
Responsibilities
- Manages an engineering group with specific responsibility for mechanical systems and equipment design function, staffing, technical mentoring as required within the engineering group, staff professional and personal development, developing and sustaining supervisors/technical leaders for key areas of responsibility, and budget adherence. Also, technically lead and/or execute engineering projects/programs.
- Ensures customer satisfaction via on time delivery of product releases and prompt resolution of critical issues.
- Ensures the integration of engineering resources with cross-functional teams to meet product goals for the division.
- Interface with internal and external customers regarding engineering issues for division.
- Provides management with updates pertaining to progress in specific programs and initiatives, and assures that information required in other functional areas is disseminated appropriately.
- Define, develop, and sustain product strategy, objectives and roadmap.
- Makes final decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensures effective achievement of operation’s objectives.
- Guides programs for the research and development of new technologies relating to mechanical engineering as appropriate, and ensures that newly created processes, designs, and/or methodologies are incorporated into Applied Materials products/services, and/or disseminated to other areas as needed.
- Assures that a full range of technical reviews are held.
- Ensures that all phases of project, program, and/or process development are documented and that information required in other functional areas is reported, disseminated, or transferred, as appropriate. Ensures compliance with Company policies regarding safety, Engineering/Lab notebooks, patents, and confidentiality.
Job Specific Knowledge
- Requires functional expertise, knowledge of multiple disciplines, broad company knowledge and additional industry or business knowledge.
- Knowledge necessary to perform job includes: thorough knowledge of mechanical engineering design, troubleshooting to component level, system engineering, and safety code proficiency; proficiency in solving engineering problems using analytical techniques and engineering knowledge; extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering technology trends; thorough understanding of product and business requirements; and general knowledge of appropriate materials, components and technologies used in the semiconductor equipment industry.
- Should have thorough understanding and application of engineering principles.
- Should have thorough understanding of the interrelationship of technologies and their effect on product design, including serviceability, manufacturability, safety and reliability.
- Also should have thorough knowledge of company policies and practices; thorough knowledge of AMAT products and manufacturing processes; thorough knowledge of successful leadership and management techniques; thorough knowledge of project/ program planning process; thorough knowledge of semiconductor equipment, and mechanical engineering industry trends.

Education
- Knowledge and skills typically acquired by a completed BS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline (or equivalent knowledge), and 12+ years directly related experience; or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline (or equivalent knowledge) and 9+ years directly related experience; 4+ years prior experience in management capacity.
- Preferred previous work experience: engineering experience with a semiconductor or capital equipment manufacturer.
