TOTAL Gas and Power (TGP), one of the four branches of TOTAL, a major international energy company, is dedicated to the commercial development of gas resources and alternative energies (Solar PV, concentrated solar power, advanced biofuels, carbon capture and storage). TGP pursues differentiation through technology as the first step towards building competitive integrated industrial operations in these renewable energies.
The ambition of TOTAL is to become the global leader in the solar industry. The organization has been involved in photovoltaic energy research since 1983, and leverages an original networked innovation model in order to develop technologies that will make a real difference in the near or mid-term future. The network already includes several partnerships with leading academic labs such as the Laboratoire de Physique des Interfaces et Couches Minces (LPICM) and various start-up companies. In each case, researchers at the partner institution and TGP scientists jointly design and carry out the research efforts.
One of TGPs most important partners in the solar industry is the Belgium based Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre (Imec), where cutting edge microelectronics and photovoltaics are developed. Within Imec, TOTAL is running a team of scientists working on advanced crystalline silicon (c Si) photovoltaic technology. The projects of this team are aligned with another of TOTALs partners, the California based company SunPower Corp., renowned for developing the worlds most efficient and reliable solar panels.
TOTAL is seeking a Photovoltaic Research Local Team Manager to lead its photovoltaic technology team within Imec and steer it towards success.
The candidate will lead a highly-skilled team of scientists, engineers, PhD students and Post-docs. He/she will benefit from a large degree of autonomy to develop, create, and propose research programs in c-Si solar technology. The scope of the research programs is vast, going from wafering to modules with emphasis on both characterization and fabrication processes. The objective is to industrialize the majority of these programs. TOTAL is strongly committed to this project and willing to provide the Photovoltaic Research Team with the resources necessary to achieve outstanding results.
The principal responsibilities of the Photovoltaic Research Local Team Manager will be:
Managing members of the TOTAL research team, which should include about 10 permanent positions and several PhD students by the end of 2012:
- Mentoring, coaching and leading team members on a daily basis to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work.
-Liaising with the Imec team and coordinating resource topics.
Driving existing R&D projects and characterization processes, and drawing on his /her scientific knowledge on c-Si solar cells to propose new projects:
- Developing and/or validating full-scale project plans (research capabilities, timelines, milestones etc) and associated communications documents.
- Tracking project milestones and deliverables.
- Identifying and managing project dependencies and critical path.
- Analyzing results and troubleshooting problem areas.
Coordinating with TOTAL:
- Liaising with TOTAL project stakeholders on an ongoing basis.
- Centralizing and organizing reporting, information, and data of the team with Imec, TOTAL headquarters, and affiliates (SunPower etc.).
